m. The hell-limper, -hobbler, the devil lamed by his fall from heaven, Andr. Kmbl. 2343; An. 1173. Grimm [Deutsche Mythologie, 944-5] speaking of the devil observes 'Am ersten fällt sein lahmer fuss auf, daher der hinkende teufel [diable boiteux], hinkebein, vom sturz aus dem himmel in den abgrund der hölle scheint er gelähmt, wie der von Zeus herabgeschleuderte Hephäst.'
