An elder or chief bishop, an archbishop; sĕnior episcŏpus, archiepiscŏpus; the Pope is so called by king Alfred :-- Ðá wæs Vitalianus Papa ðæs apostolícan setles ealdorbiscop then Pope Vitalian was the chief bishop of the apostolic seat; sedi apostŏlĭcæ præerat, Bd. 4, 1; S. 563, 23: 2, 13; S. 516, 1: 5, 8; S. 621, 39.
