to make dark, to blacken :-- Heó (the dove) nolde ǽfre under salwed bord (in the ark, which was dark-coloured from the pitch that had been smeared over it) syððan ætýwan, Cd. Th. 89, 15; Gen. 1481. [Cf. O. H. Ger. gi-salwian decolorare; salwet obscuratum; salawi fuscatio.
