wíc. III. From the Latin words which are translated by wícgeréfa">m. The reeve of a wíc. III. From the Latin words which are translated by wícgeréfa, it seems that the official so denominated was concerned in collecting taxes, and from a passage in the laws that it was one of his duties to act as witness at sales. As a wícgeréfa of Winchester is mentioned in the Chronicle, wíc cannot be confined to small towns :-- Wícgeréfa publicanus, Wrt. Voc. i. 18, 47. Se (St. Matthew) wæs theloniarius, ðæt is gafoles moniend and wícgeréfa, Shrn. 131, 24.
