According to the Old English Dictionary:

æ-mód

adj. [æ without, mód mind] Out of mind, mad, dismayed, discouraged; amens :-- Forðam Rómáne wǽron swá asmóde, ðæt hý ne wéndon ðæt hí ða burh bewérian mihton because the Romans were so out of heart, they thought that they could not guard the city, Ors. 3, 4; Bos. 56, 12. æ-mod
