According to the Old English Dictionary:

for-slítan

p. -slát, pl. -sliton; pp. -sliten [slítan to tear] To tear with the teeth, to devour; mordĭcus lacĕrāre, comĕdĕre :-- Lét [wyrm] hiora wyrta wæstme forslítan he let [the worm] devour the fruit of their plants, Ps. Th. 77, 46. [O. Sax. farslítan to tear up, consume.] for-slitan
