p. de; pp. ed To believe, confide, trust; crēdĕre, confīdĕre :-- Gif gé willaþ mínre mihte geléfan if ye will believe my power, Cd. 219; Th. 280, 6; Sat. 251. Geléfst ðú ðæt seó wyrd wealde disse worulde dost thou believe that fortune governs this world? Bt. 5, 3; Fox 12, 1.
