According to the Old English Dictionary:

Substitute: weary or sad in mind :-- Brōdor ofscēt ōderne . . . : þæt wæs feohleás gefeoht fyrenum gesyngad hredre hyge-mēde one brother shot the other . . . that was a fight where no bōt could be claimed (cf.
