According to the Old English Dictionary:

- to push, poke, thrust, put out the eyes :-- Gif þé slána lyste, þonne sete þú þínne winstran þúman on þínes lytlan fingres lið and pýt mið þínum scytefingre in þíne wynstran hand on þornes getácnunge þe hí on weaxað, Tech. ii. 124, 24. Hé lét him pýtan út his eágan (euulsis oculis), and ceorfan of his handa, Chr. 796; P. 56, 26 (N. E. D. put.] v. á-pýtan (given wrongly under á-pícan). pytan
