According to the Old English Dictionary:

adj. Incapacitated, disabled, infirm, feeble :-- Se wæs Æþelstánes biscopes gespelia syððan hé unfére wæs, Chr. 1055; Erl. 190, 21. [Þa iwærð þe king unfere.
