These five letters indicate their names by themselves, and without these letters no word can be written, and therefore they are called the five vocal sounds, Ælfc. Gr. 2; Som. 2, 44-46. Consonantes, ðæt is samod-swégende, forðanðe hí swígaþ mid ðám fíf clypigendlícum consonants, that is, sounding together, because they are made articulate by the five vocal sounds, Som. 2, 50.
