a sole (?), 'a collar of wood, put round the neek of cattle to confine them to the stelch. "A bow about a beestes necke." Palsgrave.' Halliwell. 'Sole, a rope or halter to tie cattle in the stall,' Kennett's Parochial Antiquities. Among 'husbandlie furniture' Tusser gives 'soles, fetters, and shackles [cf. however sál.]:--Sol orbita, Wrt.
