Substitute: A place which is a sanctuary on account of the sacred character superstitiously attributed to it, an asylum :-- Wé lǽrað ꝥ preósta gehwilc ǽlcne hǽðendóm ádwǽsce, and forbeóde. . . þá gemearr þe man drífð on mislicum gewíglungum and on friðsplottum and on ellenum . . . and on stánum, Ll.
