II. the foot; pēs, gen. pĕdis :-- The foot of a man, a measure of length, was divided into twelve equal parts or inches, m. inch; and an inch is three barley-corns in length. In Anglo-Saxon times, the people and their rulers were satisfied with the simplest weights and measures, thus a yard was three feet, of twelve inches each foot, while an inch was in length three barley-corns. In our day, the legislature passed an act so late as July 30, 1855. It is styled An Act for legalising and preserving the restored standards and weights and measures.
