- m. A title which seems to have been introduced by the Danes. It occurs several times in the Chronicle, e.g. Ysopa hold and Óscytel hold, 905; Erl. 98, 34. Þurcytel eorl and ða holdas ealle, 918; Erl. 104, 22. Þurferþ eorl and ða holdas, 921; Erl. 107, 28. It is the Norse höldr which is thus defined 'sá er höldr er hann hefir óðöl at erfðum tekit bæði eptir föður ok möður, þau er bans forellrar hafa átt áðr fyrir þéim,' see Cl. and Vig. Dict. höldr. The importance of the hold in England is marked in the following passage :-- Holdes and cyninges heáhgeréfan wergild iiii þúsend þrymsa, L. Wg. 4; Th. i. 186, 8. hold
