adj. I. Proud, haughty, arrogant, insolent; the word remains with a somewhat different meaning in rank, used of coarse but fertile growth :-- Gif ǽnig man hæbbe módigne sunu and rancne (protervum) ðe nelle híran his fæder and his méder, Deut. 21, 18.
