p. de. I. in a physical sense, to harden, temper metal :-- Hē (the goldsmith) gehyrded and gehyrsted wel, Vy. 74. Gesmyrede and gehyrde lita (cf. ātre gemǣled lita (veneno spicula), 96, 69, and see āhyrded, B. 1460), Wrt. Voc. ii. 51, 49. II. in a moral sense, (1) to inspire with fortitude, strengthen, confirm :-- Se gefeá dāra heofon-licena gōda hī gehierde (roborat) wid dǣm brocum, Past. 393, 35.
