m. [eád happy, gár spear] Edgar, second son of Edmund, and grandson of Alfred the Great. Edgar, in A.D. 955, succeeded to the kingdom of Mercia; and, at the death of his brother Eadwig, in A.D. 959, to the kingdoms of Wessex and Northumbria, over which he reigned sixteen years. He was, therefore, king for twenty years, from A.D. 955-975 :-- Hér, A.D. 955, Eádgár féng to Myrcena ríce here Edgar succeeded to the kingdom of Mercia, Chr. 955; Erl. 119, 32.
