m. [eád happy, mund protection]. 1. Edmund the Martyr, king of East Anglia, was of the Old-Saxon race. He began to reign in A. D. 855. 'Anno Domĭnĭcæ incarnatiōnis DCCCLV, --Eadmundus Orientālium Anglōrum gloriosĭssimus cœpit regnāre VIII. Kalend. Januārii, id est die natālis Dŏmĭni, anno ætātis suæ decĭmo quarto,' Asser, p. 7, 26-30. He reigned fifteen years, and his death is thus recorded,--Hér, A. Edmund Ironside, son of Æthelred Atheling. Edmund began to reign in A. D. 1016, and died the same year:--A.
