According to the Old English Dictionary:

ge-dæfte
adj. Mild, gentle, meek :-- Ðín cyning cymþ to ðé, gedæfte rex tuus venit tibi, mansuetus, Mt. Bos. 21, 5. [Cf. Orm. daffte humble, quiet.] The later sense of 'daft' foolish, stupid, may be compared with the slang sense of 'soft.' ge-dæfte
